Google Business Profile optimization for contractors
Short answer
Google Business Profile optimization for contractors means the right categories, services and service areas, weekly posts with real job photos, every review answered and a monthly map of where you rank across your service area. We do all of it for you. Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are easier to match with the right searches.

What we optimize
- Primary and secondary categories, chosen for the jobs you actually want.
- Services listed in the words customers search, with short descriptions. Google says people reviewing a service business may be asked which service they got, and the choices include your service list.
- Service areas set to the towns you really drive to.
- Business description rewritten to be clear and specific, without keyword stuffing.
- Photos: real photos from that week’s jobs, added every week.
- Hours, phone and links checked and matched to your website. Other directories matter too: see NAP consistency and citation cleanup.
Every week
- A Google post from that week’s jobs: what you did, where, with photos.
- Every new review answered in your voice. Here’s how our automated Google review replies work.
Every month
- A ranking map: a grid of points across your area showing where you rank for your main search, compared with your top 3 competitors. More on how to track Map Pack rankings.
- A check of whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI answers name you.
- A short report with what changed and what we’ll do next.
Reviews aren’t the whole story. In our October 18, 2026 check of Google’s top 3 non-paid Map Pack listings for “roofer near me”, “ac repair near me” and “plumber near me” in 24–30 US cities each, the first listing often didn’t have the most reviews of the three. See who gets into the Map Pack and the Google review benchmarks.
What we never do
- Stuff keywords or cities into your business name.
- Use fake addresses or create extra profiles.
- Promise a specific ranking. Nobody honest can. Google itself says there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Here’s what we promise instead.

Google Business Profile optimization checklist
Doing it yourself? Work down this list. Google’s own tips to improve your local ranking start with complete, accurate details.
- Name: your real business name, exactly as on your trucks and signs. No added cities or keywords.
- Categories: one primary category for the work you want most, plus up to 9 additional ones you really do. Don’t pick General contractor if most of your work is roofing.
- Services: every service you offer, in the words customers use, each with a short description.
- Service area: up to 20 towns or ZIP codes, within about 2 hours’ drive of your base, not the whole state. Hide your address if customers don’t come to you.
- Hours: regular hours, plus holiday and special hours, so nobody calls on a day you’re closed.
- Description: up to 750 characters on what you do and where, in plain words, no keyword lists.
- Phone and website: the phone number your website shows, or a call-tracking number with your main number added as an additional phone. Link your real website.
- Attributes: tick the ones Google offers for your category that are true for you.
- Photos: logo, cover photo, your crew, your trucks and real jobs. No stock photos.
- Reviews: ask every customer, and reply to every review.
- Posts: a short update from recent jobs, every week.
Check it every month. Anyone can suggest edits to your profile, and Google sometimes updates details on its own.

The right primary category and service list is different in every trade. Questions about Google Business Profile optimization
What is Google Business Profile optimization?
Setting up and maintaining your profile so Google understands what you do and where: the right categories, every service listed, accurate service areas and hours, real photos, weekly posts and replies to reviews.
How long does GBP optimization take to work?
Profile fixes go live within days. Rankings are harder to predict. Local SEO practitioners often give 30 to 90 days as a rough estimate, depending on your competition. The monthly ranking map shows what changed.
Can I add keywords or cities to my business name?
No. Adding words that aren’t part of your real business name breaks Google’s guidelines and can get the profile suspended. We never do it.
Do I need a storefront to show up on Google Maps?
No. Service-area businesses can hide their address and list the areas they serve. You still need a real business address to verify the profile.
How much does Google Business Profile optimization cost?
It’s included in Map Pack Growth at $297/mo and Map Pack Takeover at $497/mo, with a free 2-week trial, no setup fee and no contract.
How many categories can you have on Google Business Profile?
One primary category and up to 9 additional ones. Google’s guidelines say to use as few as it takes to describe your core business. Some local SEO practitioners report gains from adding every category that covers work you really do. They also see rankings swing for a while after a primary category change, so choose it with care.
How many service areas can you add to a Google Business Profile?
Up to 20. Google says your service area shouldn’t extend farther than about 2 hours’ driving time from where your business is based.
Why does a competitor with fewer reviews rank above me?
Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and reviews are only one part of prominence. A competitor can be closer to the person searching, or have categories and services that match the search better.
Do Google posts help your ranking?
Google hasn’t said posts are a ranking factor. They keep your profile current with recent jobs and photos, which helps a homeowner decide to call. Treat them as proof of work, not a ranking trick.
How do I verify my Google Business Profile?
Google picks which methods to offer you, based on your business type and region. They can include phone, text, email, video or postcard. For a video, a service-area business usually shows where it is, its tools or equipment, and proof that it manages the business.
