Reviews & Maps / Guide
How many Google reviews does a roofer need?
Short answer
There’s no magic number. You need about as many reviews as the three roofing companies Google shows for “roofer near me” in your area, plus new ones every month. If they average 180 and you have 40, your target is 180.
Why the number depends on your town
Google decides who shows up in the Map Pack using three things: how relevant you are to the search, how close you are to the person searching, and how well known you are. Reviews feed that last one. Google says your review count and rating factor into local ranking.
So the bar is set by your competition. In a small town, 50 reviews might put you on top. In a busy metro, the top three might each have 300 or more.
Find your number in 10 minutes
- Open a private browser window and search “roofer near me” from your office.
- Write down the review count of each company in the top three.
- Repeat from two or three other parts of your service area. Results change by location.
- Average the counts. That’s your target.
- Check when their newest reviews were posted. That’s the pace you need to keep up with.
Recent reviews matter as much as the total
A homeowner choosing a roofer reads the newest reviews first. 200 reviews with the last one from eight months ago looks like a company that slowed down or stopped caring. A steady few every week looks busy and trusted.
Don’t chase a perfect 5.0
A 4.8 from 180 reviews usually earns more trust than a 5.0 from 12. An occasional bad review, answered well, shows homeowners how you handle problems. What hurts is having few reviews, or bad ones nobody replied to.
How long it takes to close the gap
It depends on how many jobs you finish and how many customers you ask. An example: you finish 40 jobs a month and one in three customers leaves a review. That’s about 13 new reviews a month, so a gap of 140 takes under a year. Ask every customer the same day and send one reminder, and that number usually goes up.
Illustrative math. Your real numbers depend on job volume and how you ask.
